Have you ever felt a burning sensation in your chest or felt nauseous after eating a heavy meal? Heartburn is indigestion that is caused by stomach acid that has flown back up into the esophagus. Other common symptoms include burping, flatulence, and hiccuping.

9 Natural Heartburn Home Remedies

Calcium Carbonate

Calcium Carbonate

For a stomach upset with heartburn or acid indigestion, try pure calcium carbonate – the active ingredient in most antacids. Find an easily absorbed powdered or liquid version to relieve pain fast. If you have chronic heartburn or osteoporosis, speak with your doctor about safely supplementing with calcium.

Chewing gum

Chewing gum

Besides eliminating garlic breath, chewing gum after a meal might have other advantages, research suggests. In a small study from the Journal of Dental Research, people with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms experienced heartburn relief when they chewed a piece of sugar-free gum for 30 minutes after a meal.

“Chewing gum stimulates the salivary flow rate,” says study author Rebecca Moazzez, DPhil, clinical lecturer in King’s College London’s department of restorative dentistry. “Any acid that accumulates in the gut is washed away and cleared more quickly. The clearance of acid improves GERD symptoms.”

Herbal Teas

Hear me out. Tea may sound overly simplified or a little too basic an approach, but the potent healing properties of herbs should not be taken lightly. Licorice root is a powerful herb that soothes inflammation, promotes digestion and has gentle laxative properties. Fennel seed, peppermint, and chamomile also all have soothing, digestion-promoting properties that can help to ease digestive discomfort.

This classic herbal remedy eases digestive upsets and stomach cramping caused by overeating, food poisoning, or other general complaints. Warming in nature, with anti-inflammatory properties, ginger can be taken fresh or dried, or made into teas and tinctures. For many, the act of even sucking on a piece of raw ginger can help to alleviate symptoms.

Yellow Mustard

Yellow Mustard

Vinegar, zinc, and turmeric (stimulates digestion) in mustard neutralizes the acid in the stomach.

Mustard is an alkalizing food (balances the body’s pH levels) that is slightly acidic. The exact reason on how yellow mustard works on acid reflux is unknown, but it works, and it works fast!

Method: Eat 1 teaspoon of yellow mustard. If the mustard taste is too strong, you can wash it down with some warm water or eat it with a saltine cracker.

The heartburn may initially feel worse, but after a few minutes the symptoms should subside.

Although research is limited, licorice could ease heartburn and get to the source of the problem, says Susan Blum, MD, founder and director of the Blum Center for Health in Rye Brook, N.Y.

“The contents of your stomach are  acidic…which is why antacids are not the solution,” Dr. Blum says. Instead, she says, licorice has natural stomach healing properties. Eating a lot of licorice, however, can also have serious side effects like high blood pressure, so look for DGL licorice. (It does not contain the potentially dangerous glycyrrhizic acid.)

Dr. Blum suggests trying chewable DGL licorice tablets before meals, which are available at most natural-food stores. There are even brands that do not taste like licorice.

Baking Soda

Baking soda (also known as Sodium Bicarbonate) is another quick fix for heartburn.

It’s good at quickly neutralizing the pH levels in your stomach and aids in faster digestion.

Method: Drink 1 teaspoon mixed with room temperature or warm water. Do this every other day, for a month.

Almonds are an ancient Middle Eastern remedy for ulcers. These are high in oil content which soothes the acid in the stomach. The high fiber content of the nut aids digestion.

Organic almond milk is also a good alternative to the raw nut. You can also mix oatmeal, almond milk, and bananas for a powerhouse effect. This meal is great for breakfast for adults and kids.

Method: Eat 4-5 raw almonds after each meal. If your heartburn is severe, eat a handful of almonds. The effects should take place in about 30 minutes.

Sleep on your left side

If you’re prone to nighttime acid reflux, you may want to rethink your sleep position. Many doctors suggest sleeping on an incline, which (as with your post-meal posture), may help keep stomach contents in the stomach. But the side you sleep on may also play a role.
