Beauty Industry News – Is This Proof That Kylie Jenner Is Taking Over?

Within the beauty industry news world, Kylie Jenner’s Lip Kits have become as ubiquitous as her famous family. After all, the matte liquid lipsticks were responsible for one of the buzziest product launches of all time when they debuted back in 2015. (Some say you can still hear the echo of Kylie’s first brand announcement bouncing through cyberspace.)

Since then, new products, collections, and collaborations—often developed in partnership with her older sisters—have been met with similar enthusiasm from her fans. While we knew her cosmetics line was popular and successful, we didn’t know to what sheer extent until this week. In a new interview with WWD, Kylie and her business maven mother, Kris, sat down in the latter’s Los Angeles home to discuss the beauty empire, including its accomplishments and earnings. Spoiler alert: The numbers are insane. Keep reading to see just how much money Kylie Cosmetics is earning.

beauty industry news; kylie jenner

According to the interview, Kylie Cosmetics has taken in $420 million in retail sales in just 18 months. To put that number in perspective, WWD shares that Tom Ford Beauty reached revenues of $500 million after being in the business for an entire decade. The demand becomes obvious when you look at Kylie Cosmetics’ production. Apparently, when Kylie launched her first Lip Kits, only 5000 units of each shade were produced. Now, it’s 300,000 units.

WWD can confirm these numbers since the Jenners showed them actual documentation (talk about providing proof). They can also safely share that the Kylie Cosmetics brand is set to increase its sales by 25% this year alone. A 25% increase means that the beauty empire is set to take in $386 million in sales throughout 2017. If growth continues(which, let’s be real, it will), that means Kylie Cosmetics will surpass the billion-dollar mark in 2022. Astounding? Yes. But it’s even more staggering when you consider other brands. Take Bobbi Brown, for example. The cosmetics company just reached the billion-dollar mark in 2016, after 25 years in business. Lancôme, on the other hand, only reached the billion-dollar mark in 2015, after (wait for it) 80 years on the scene. Yeah, we’re calling it: Kylie Cosmetics is set to take over the world.

“It’s Basically Freedom for Your Mind”: Martha Hunt on Her Go-To Wellness Ritual

When you scroll through Martha Hunt’s Wikipedia page, among the many accolades she’s acquired throughout her decade-long career—hitting the Paris Fashion Week runway for Issey Miyake in 2007, walking hundreds more shows, covering countless magazines, earning her Victoria’s Secret Angel wings in 2015—is a single sentence under the Personal Life category that reads: “Hunt practices Transcendental Meditation.”

It’s pretty standard for models to engage in healthful wellness practices—popular picks being yoga, boxing, and clean eating—but transcendental meditation stood out as a unique wellness ritual that isn’t so ubiquitous, particularly among the model-off-duty set. So when I sat down with Victoria’s Secret Every Day Angel Hunt in L.A. to preview the brand’s newest Body by Victoria collection now in three lining levels, the first thing I asked was for her to tell me more about the practice.

After having a laugh that the factoid appeared on her Wiki page, Hunt explained that “transcendental meditation is your mind’s vehicle to creativity—emptiness to whatever you want your mind to go to. It’s basically freedom for your mind.” Despite her jam-packed schedule, Hunt makes time for the practice for 20 minutes twice a day, ideally, but says even doing it once a day makes a big difference. “It helps to clear out all the BS in life.”
Though transcendental meditation is her favorite wellness ritual, Hunt says yoga is a good way to wind down and get a workout in at the same time. “I do think taking care of yourself, whether it’s an hour of the day at a workout or an hour of the day getting a massage, is very important in your overall well-being.” Lately, the model has been doing more restorative workouts like yoga and Pilates instead of weights but is always switching it up to keep things exciting and effective.

“I think you just have to figure out what’s best for your body,” she explains. “For me, I find the best results when I mix it up. And you keep challenging your body and tricking it. Otherwise, it gets used to the same routine, and you don’t feel like you’re seeing changes as quickly.”

Carrie Underwood Spills Her Makeup Tricks And The One Look She Regrets

Carrie Underwood is a country music superstar known to fans for her killer voice, dazzling stage presence and incredible red carpet looks. Not only has Underwood already sold an astounding 64 million albums worldwide and garned 18 #1 hit singles, last year she added another accomplishment to her already insane resume — global brand ambassador for Almay cosmetics.

HuffPost Style got the chance to speak with the 31-year-old “makeup junkie” over the phone to discuss Underwood’s “Simply American” brand relaunch with Almay, her no-makeup secret to looking great and the one look she regrets from her college/“American Idol” days.

On what “Simply American” beauty means to her:

It’s all about being confident, keeping things uncomplicated and fresh and pretty… bringing out that natural beauty that I believe every woman possesses. You know, there’s something about everybody that’s like no other and is absolutely gorgeous and it’s all about enhancing that.

On how much time it takes her to get ready in the morning:

It depends. I mean I kind of like taking my time in the morning; I’m waking up and trying to get myself going for the rest of the day. But I can be ready, start to finish in about 15 minutes — hair, makeup, everything — if I have to be, but I’d really rather not!

On her secret to looking great that doesn’t require makeup:

Water is something that is so important, not just for a beauty routine but for keeping yourself energized and making sure your body is working the way that it should. I’m always drinking water — SOOO much water!

On the makeup she always has in her purse or on the red carpet:

Definitely Almay Smart Shades Butter Kiss Lipstick. That’s just something that’s so easy to throw on or get a quick touch-up before a red carpet event. I probably have about three in my purse right now!

On the hairstyle she regrets:

Oh hair! I tend to have a natural curl in my hair anyway, but not a whole lot. When I was in college I would put a lot of product in my hair and force it to be curly. And I definitely did that my first “Idol” audition! I call it my “crunchy” hair. That I might like to undo if I could.

Why Gwyneth Paltrow ‘Would Never Want To Go Back In Time’

Gwyneth Paltrow gets a lot of flak for running a small empire by the name of Goop, which includes a website where she curates content on how to live your best life and sells luxury items that not many people can afford to purchase. But in spite of the actress-turned-wellness mogul’s seemingly perfect lifestyle, she doesn’t shy away from keeping it real, especially when discussing the fine lines on her face that become more obvious while laughing.

“First of all, I love getting older,” she told The Huffington Post. “I so value the life experience under my belt and my wrinkles come with that. I would never want to go back in time.”

The 43-year-old does want to “preserve [the] things she can” so she doesn’t have to “start cutting into her face.” So it makes total sense that she’d invest all her energy and expertise into launching an organic skincare line called Goop by Juice Beauty.

After learning about the toxic ingredients found in countless cosmetics, Paltrow revealed she didn’t rest until she and her team of chemists were able to formulate quality skincare that could end the stigma surrounding organic beauty products only being for hippies.

“We’re here to change that and say that the modern, sophisticated woman who has a very high standard in skincare also deserves a product that is as good for the body as it is for the skin,” she said.

Paltrow went on to explain how she’s had friends who’ve struggled with fertility. “There are so many things in personal skincare products that are endocrine disruptor agents. We want balanced hormones, we want to be fertile, and then we’re imbibing all of these toxins that are throwing off our natural hormonal system. Who’s to say it is link or not linked, but it certainly doesn’t point to a good direction,” she said.

The six-piece line — which includes a cleanser, scrub, daytime moisturizer, night cream, face oil and eye cream — is formulated with skin-nourishing oils that soothe and brighten dull, dry complexions, food-grade preservatives (which Jimmy Fallon put to a taste test) and plant-based cellulose beads that gently remove dead skin cells. As a self-professed lover of facial oils, Paltrow made sure to round out the collection with an enriching face oil.

“We’re here to change that and say that the modern, sophisticated woman who has a very high standard in skincare also deserves a product that is as good for the body as it is for the skin,” she said.

If you’re still wondering whether the blonde beauty has ruled out plastic surgery for good, she told us to check in with her when she’s 60 and see how she feels.

“I think that every woman has to make that determination for herself,” said Paltrow. “But I think the most important thing is that you love and value yourself.”

15 Shocking Celebrity Skin Beauty Treatments

Celebrities go to extreme measures for beauty, doing anything and everything to maintain their appearance. With millions of dollars and a career riding on their good looks, stars will try–and often, get hooked on–the most bizarre skin beauty treatments. Just to shock you, we’ve rounded up fifteen of the weirdest ones.

Kim Kardashian’s Vampire Facelift

Celebrity Skin;Kim Kardashian Vampire Facelift

It’s not easy being Kim Kardashian; she has to spend so much time and money (and pain) on maintaining her highly photographed face. Recently, she shocked her fans by posting pictures of herself during a Vampire Facelift. Blood is drawn from the victim’s arm, platelets are extracted and then injected into the face to prevent wrinkles. What can I say, beauty hurts.

Angelina Jolie’s Caviar Body Treatment

Celebrity Skin; Angelina Jolie

Ange has expensive taste; she’s been known to indulge in caviar-based body treatments. Yep, fish egg extract is smeared over her skin to firm and moisturize. Apparently she relied on this regimen during her pregancies to prevent stretch marks. We think we’ll stick with coconut oil.

Demi Moore’s Blood-Sucking Leech Therapy

Celebrity Skin; Demi Moore

Demi really goes to the extreme when it comes to her looks. She once went to Europe specifically to experience the detoxifying benefits of leech therapy (yes, as in those slimy blood-sucking things that most of us hope never to see!). The leeches suck blood from your skin while releasing enzymes that (apparently) remove toxins from your blood.

Kate Hudson’s Ice Water Dunk

Celebrity Skin; Kate Hudson

Kate submerges her face in freezing cold water to revitalize her glow. The icy temperature reduces puffiness and boosts circulation.

Cindy Crawford’s Milk Spray

Celebrity Skin; Cindy Crawford

Cindy mixes milk with water for a hydrating facial spritz. Not sure this would smell very nice but she’s obviously doing something right because she’s just as hot now as she was in her heyday.

Bar Refaeli’s 24-Carat Gold Facial

Celebrity Skin; Bar Refaeli

Model Bar Refaeli made waves last month when she posted a photo of herself receiving a 24-carat liquid gold facial. This metal treatment will set you back the price of your summer holiday but hey, anything for beauty.

Victoria Beckham’s Bird Poo Facials

Victoria Beckham is a big fan of Japanese nightingale facials which use dehydrated bird poo to brighten the complexion and reduce the appearance of acne. Doesn’t sound very posh now does it?

Sandra Bullock’s Hemorrhoid Cream Eye Treatment

Sandra’s little beauty secret involves hemorrhoid cream. That’s right, she dabs Preparation H under her eyes to reduce the appearance of lines and puffiness. We’d rather not put this stuff on our bottoms, let alone under our eyes! Do not try this at home folks.

Jennifer Lopez’s Placenta Facials

J. Lo is desperate to slow the process of aging and what better way than with human placenta facials!? She swears by the expensive placenta collagen masks reporting that they rejuvenate her skin and keep her looking fresh and youthful.

Halle Berry’s Coffee Grind Body Scrub

Caffeine is a celeb staple; whether in a Starbucks cup or in the shower, coffee is an essential part of living in Hollywood. Halle rubs ground coffee all over her body as a stimulating and blood circulating exfoliant.

Kate Middleton’s Bee Venom Mask

The Duchess of Cambridge created a buzz by using a bee venom face mask before she wed her prince charming. Said to be a non-invasive alternative to botox, this mask lifts, firms and promises anti-aging skincare without the commitment of cosmetic procedures.

Katie Holmes’s Snail Slime Skin Care

The French eat snails, Hollywood actors smear them on their skin. Katie discovered that snail slime skin care products smooth and regenerate damaged tissue leaving her with soft, glowing skin. Because snail slime has a mix of elastin, glycolic acid and protein, these strange products are slithering their way to celeb popularity.

Catharine Zeta-Jones’s Fruity Toothpaste

Catharine uses fresh fruit like strawberry and pineapple to scrub her teeth to pearly whiteness. We’re usually trying to get strawberry seeds out of our teeth not into them but Catharine’s chompers are pretty white so she might actually be onto something.

Teri Hatcher’s Red Wine Soak

Some people just love red wine–Teri Hatcher takes this love to a new level by adding a few cups to her bath. She insists the fiery fluid is moisturizing and increases skin cell renewal.

Snooki’s Kitty Litter Face Scrub

Why anyone would ever do this is a mystery but Snooki has admitted to using kitty litter as a cheap alternative to face exfoliant. There are plenty of natural, inexpensive and gentle ways to slough off dead skin without having to resort to your cat’s facilities.
